The orchestra is the national leader in developing young people to take their places on platforms and in the audiences.

DEVELOPING CAREER PATHS FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS AND PERFORMERS

  • Mzansi Composers’ Competition with the CPO (to be announced in June)
  • South African Conductor’s Competition which will be held in October 2021 (first round and masterclasses)
  • Annual community gala concerts which showcase young local performers
  • Annual National Youth Music Competition
  • Annual Youth Music Festival
  • Collaborations with companies such as ZipZap Circus and Elvis Sibeko Studios

SCHOOLS’ CONCERTS AND AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT

For nearly two decades, the CPO has been visiting schools to offer young learners the opportunity to hear a full symphony orchestra and grow potential audiences. Where appropriate, learners are invited to perform with the CPO or conduct it, under the expert direction of resident conductor Brandon Phillips. During Covid, the programme was suspended and a concert was filmed showcasing orchestral instruments which is available here
