Born in Scotland, David began playing trumpet at the age of 9, taught by his father, a trombonist with BBC Scottish Orchestra. He played in the Clyde Bank Brass Band until the age of 17. David studied for a three-year Light Music course at Leeds College of Music, where he was awarded his diploma with distinction). He also played in dance bands in the north of England before attending the National Centre for Orchestral Studies (NCOS) in London, graduating with distinction, and freelancing with various amateur and professional orchestras and bands. He worked with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra, and then in 1986 came to South Africa as Alternate Principal trumpet, playing with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and Solid Brass Quintet. In 2000, he became Became Principal Trumpet of the CPO. in 2000. He also plays in the Jonny Cooper Orchestra and Mike Campbell Big Band from time to time, and teaches trumpet at UCT. For fun, he does DIY and woodwork and actually made the podium that CPO conductors use today. He is a member of the Foresters’ Running Club, completing 13 Two Oceans Ultra marathons, 37 standard marathon, 87 half marathons and many various other running distances.
