Principal trombone since 2001, Slavo came to South Africa from his native Slovakia in 1994, to join the Transvaal Philharmonic Orchestra and then the New Arts Philharmonic. With two older brothers who were professional musicians (a trumpeter then trombonist and a percussionist), his own career path from the age of 5 was clear. “I want to be on stage too,!” He later studied at the Bratislava Conservatory, he participated in. After his graduation in 1990, he played with various orchestras such as the State Theatre in Bratislava, the Big Band of Slovak Radio Bratislava and of the Slovak Broadcast Centre and with other ensembles in Germany, Austria, Norway, Italy and Switzerland.
He also taught at Pretoria Boys High and Crawford College before joining the CPO.
Why the trombone? Our section has the ability to sing beautiful chorales and the effect of the different colors of sound makes the trombone a really rewarding instrument.
