Why support us?

The pleasure and privilege of enjoying well-played excellent music cannot be taken for granted, nor can the educational and healing benefits be ignored for the well-being of a community. Support, therefore, for the CPO in big and small ways is crucial to ensure its future well into the next 100 years. The CPO needs your support to ensure that it remains a visible and viable orchestra as it looks to the future, and this includes the nurturing of those young people who are the backbone as emerging musicians and audience members. The CPO has to-date won accolades across the continent and globally too with performances traversing a wide repertoire and showcasing local and international artists. As pillar to  Cape Town Opera and Cape Town City Ballet, as well as musicals, the orchestra’s contribution to the arts is unrivalled.

Young and emerging talent is also fostered through the CPO’s Youth Education and Development Programme that takes classical music education to impoverished schools and communities on a no-fee basis. The thoughtful generosity of individual donors, corporate partners, private foundations, government, and a myriad volunteers is matched by stewardship of resources, good corporate governance and efficiencies built into every level of the CPO’s operations. The continued dependence on support and goodwill from our donors and sponsors is key to the CPO’s role as a catalytic advocate for music education, a promoter of talent and crucially as an orchestra that performs on par with the best in the world. As is the case globally, ticket sales alone are not sufficient for sustainability and we urge our well-wishers to support us.

Please find below options to suit various givers, from individuals, foundations and corporates, including consideration of the CPO in your estate planning. There are also options to donate to the Endowment Fund, the Duet Endowment Fund and via the Friends of Orchestral Music.

How recognition works:
Donors are placed in categories according to the amount donated or sponsored. As your contributions accumulate, your name will move up the ladder from a supporter to a platinum partner. Donors also receive the opportunity to have their logo displayed and in order to qualify, reach the Chairman’s Circle of R5 m and more OR you are a current sponsor of concerts, artists, outreach programmes, events or launches. Recognition in the concert programmes is limited to those donating above R10 000.  All other names appear on the web.

See the list of our sponsors here.

Individual Giving
The CPO remains reliant on the generosity of individuals to supplement its annual income. Options include monthly stop orders, annual grants or once-off payments. The pledge form here enables a seamless process of giving using electronic banking and other means. Immediate donations can also be made via Snapscan.

Legacy and Bequest Programme
The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is honoured to have been chosen as a beneficiary in the estates of a number of music lovers over the years. By leaving a legacy gift to the CPO, you leave an indelible mark not only on this 100-year-old institution but also on classical music more broadly.

Your generosity is key to helping the CPO continue to develop into a diverse and growing orchestra maintaining not only international standards but also striving to be representative of South Africa’s multicultural society and live its vision to be an Orchestra for All Seasons. A legacy gift or bequest will make a vital difference to the long-term success of the CPO. Contributions to the CPO Legacy and Bequest Programme can be made at any age and in ways that fit individual circumstances. Please contact Mary MacGregor Frew on 021-4109809 or email mary@cpo.org.za for more detail.

Support for educational projects
As a catalytic force for music education in marginalized areas, support for the CPO’s education efforts is critical to the programme’s expansion. As the CPO is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation in South Africa and also in the UK, by the UK Charities Commission, targeted support for CPO’s education work qualifies donors to a tax-deductible donation and an 18A receipt.

Donations can also be made via ProCAPEriccio, a German-organization with tax-free benefits via Friends of Orchestral Music.

Many young musicians in the CPO’s developmental orchestras, the Cape Town Youth Orchestra and the Cape Town Youth Wind Ensemble are in desperate need of funds to help them complete tertiary education, an education that will greatly assist them in their future careers as members of the professional orchestra.

Purchase/sponsorship/donation of instruments
