Conrad started with French horn lessons in 1985 at the Musicon in Bloemfontein with Eddie Muir and later Alois Haindl. The Musicon was a paradise for young music students, he says, with groups and orchestras for every age and standard culminating in the Free State Youth Orchestra of which he was a member for many years. From 1995-1998, he was a part-time member of the PACOFS orchestra in Bloemfontein. Conrad was also a member of the South African National Youth Orchestra from 1996-1999 and toured with this orchestra to Russia in 1998 when it played in Red Square.
He completed his BA Mus degree in 1997 at the University of the Free State, receiving the “ Ou Presidensie Stigtingsprys” for the best third-year student with an orchestral instrument as a major. In 1999, he Joined the National Chamber Orchestra in Mmabatho in the North West Province as second horn and stayed there until its unfortunate closure in 2000.
At the beginning of 2000, he went to America to study for a couple of months with Ronald Lemon, the Associate Professor at A&M University of West Texas, and on his return joined the KZNPO until he won the position in the CPO in 2001. He and Martina have been settled in Cape Town ever since.
