With more than 20 years’ experience in the orchestral field in South Africa at the time, both as a performing musician and as an administrator, General Manager Ivan Christian joined the CPO in 2000. Born in the UK, he studied the horn at the Royal Academy of Music and was awarded an ARAM (Associate of the Royal Academy of Music). A career as a professional horn-player with the various orchestras that served the State Theatre, Pretoria, from 1978 to 1991, was followed by a short stint as Senior Music Librarian. Ivan was appointed as Manager of the Transvaal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1993 and later rose to the position of General Manager of the New Arts Philharmonic Orchestra, a post he held until June 2000 when the members of the orchestra, ballet and opera companies employed by the State Theatre were all retrenched. Ivan was also involved with music education, and was the secretary of the STTEP working group of the South African Music Education Trust (SAMET). For this he was awarded a Certificate in recognition of valued contribution and service to music education by the International Society for Music Education. For relaxation, Ivan now enjoys Latin American and ballroom dancing as he says his brief flirtation with skydiving some years ago was just a passing phase and he now prefers to keep his feet firmly grounded!
