Friends of Orchestral Music
The Friends of Orchestral Music’s history as a Cape Town Music Society goes back 40 years. The committee that manages the Friends consists of 12 enthusiastic volunteers whose aim has always been to support the resident orchestra and its musicians in the Mother City.
They strive to create and maintain a bond between the public and “their” orchestra by hosting receptions after concerts, where members and their guests can meet musicians, conductors and soloists. They also arrange fundraising events such as soirees, high teas and dinners where members of the orchestra provide classical music. Monies raised at these events are used to sponsor ad hoc musicians, soloists, conductors or a whole concert to help ease the financial burden of the orchestra.
The Friends of Orchestral Music also encourage schools to attend open rehearsals and help to create awareness about orchestral music among the younger generation by informing them about forthcoming programmes.
The Friends have established a Trust that largely relies on the generosity of members and the public. Monies donated are used to sponsor young musicians from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to make use of invitations to further their studies overseas.
Membership fees per annum are R200 single or R300 per family (2 persons), schools, retirement organisations and clubs. Student membership is R100 (production of student card required) and corporate membership is R3000 p.a.
Membership forms are available from the Secretary, Treasurer or other committee members (see contact details below) and on the FOM website at www.fomct.com.
Members of the Friends receive quarterly newsletters, are entitled to an additional 10% off season ticket subscriptions of the symphony seasons and a free glass of wine at post-concert receptions.
