CPO’s Youth Gala on December 01
Brandon Phillips, music director of the flagship Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, will conduct the 70 musicians in works by Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Liadov.
Under the direction of their conductor Faan Malan, the 70 musicians of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble will a selection of works that include composers Astor Piazzolla and Percy Grainger.
The Junior Strings, conducted by Charlene Bogenhagen, will perform arrangements of a piece from The Nutcracker and the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky and Fiddlelicious by Mansukhani.
All the works for the youth orchestra and the wind ensemble are designed to show why both the CPYO and the CPYWE is considered the best of their kind.
Feeding into the CPYO is the Junior Strings Ensemble, who will perform, while the Masidlale musicians, aged from seven to 16 and coming from the townships, Green Point and the West Coast, will perform in two groups- strings and winds.
Says Louis Heyneman, CEO of the CPO, “The CPO has already engaged several ‘graduates’ as permanent musicians who developed from the youth orchestra and engages many as ad hoc musicians when the need to augment the CPO for symphony concerts arises. “
