SA COMPOSERS’ COMPETITION INAUGURAL WINNER
Conrad Asman was awarded first place in the first SA Composers’ Competition title at a concert at the Hugo Lambrechts’ Music Centre on March 4. With the title comes a cash prize and a one-year residency with the CPO. The competition was sponsored by the City of Cape Town. He won the award for his composition, Beyond the Atom, a six-minute piece about “the things we know and the things we do not know” and which as Hendrik Hofmeyr, non-voting chairman of the panel of adjudicators, said is “a virtual treasure-trove of novel and inventive orchestral devices, employed with great skill and expertise… The mastery displayed in the writing is of the highest order and evinces all the characteristics one would expect of a true orchestral composer.”
