Doctors and dentists by day, pianists by night … and 21 of these top amateur pianists are converging on Cape Town to celebrate 10 years of Les Amateurs Virtuoses Piano Festival. The festival takes place from November 10 to 18, culminating in a concert with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Masterclasses will be presented by Albie van Schalkwyk, Francois du Toit and Jan Hugo from South Africa, Philip Fowke from the UK and Jay Gottlieb from America. Participants attending come from France, Russia, Germany, moves to the Endler Hall in Stellenbosch for a masterclass and afternoon concert; further concerts take place from Monday to Friday each night at 7.30pm in the Baxter Concert Hall in collaboration with the SA College of Music at UCT. The opening concert on November 10 will take place at the Cape Town City Hall, with 40 violinists from Muzukidz and a number of pianists performing Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. On Saturday 17th the Festival will take an afternoon concert to Guga S’thebe in Langa and the festival finishes with a spectacular finale concert on Sunday 18th November where six of the participants will perform with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in the City Hall, Cape Town.
