They strive to create and maintain a bond between the public and "their" orchestra by hosting receptions after concerts, where members and their guests can meet musicians, conductors and soloists. They also arrange fundraising events such as soirees, high teas and dinners where members of the orchestra provide classical music. Monies raised at these events are used to sponsor ad hoc musicians, soloists, conductors or a whole concert to help ease the financial burden of the orchestra.
The Friends of Orchestral Music also encourage schools to attend open rehearsals and help to create awareness about orchestral music among the younger generation by informing them about forthcoming programmes.
The Friends have established a Trust that largely relies on the generosity of members and the public. Monies donated are used to sponsor young musicians from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to make use of invitations to further their studies overseas.
