Kirstenbosch Sunset Concert

21 March, Kirstenbosch Gardens, 17:30

Conductor: Pieter Daniel
Soloist: James Grace (guitar)

Rossini: La gazza ladra Overture
Rodrigo: Concierto De Aranjuez
Tchaikovsky:  Symphony No. 4

Pieter Daniel started playing the violin at the age of four and made his orchestral début at twelve, performing the Mozart Violin Concerto KV 218 in Frankfurt, Germany. The same year he also played that concerto in Johannesburg and Pretoria with the former PACT orchestra. At the age of nineteen he graduated with distinction from the Hochschule in Frankfurt, becoming the youngest person to date to be awarded the highest Diploma for musical studies in Germany. For the past 15 years he has enjoyed working with young musicians as a Professor at the Folkwang University in Essen.

James Grace is one of one South Africa’s leading concert artists. In recent years he has appeared with the Cape Philharmonic, the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic, the Johannesburg Festival, the Johannesburg Philharmonic and the Free State Symphony in concerti by Rodrigo, Villa – Lobos, Giuliani and Vivaldi.

James studied at the Royal College of Music in London as a Foundation Scholar with Carlos Bonell. Upon graduating he became the first guitarist in the history of the College to receive the Tagore Gold Medal, an annual award presented to the most outstanding student.

After spending two years in Doha, in the Arabian State of Qatar where he taught guitar at an International Music Centre, James returned to South Africa and was appointed Head of Classical Guitar Studies at the University of Cape Town.

James continues to maintain a full time performing and teaching schedule. He appears regularly at the major arts festivals, and enjoys collaborations with various chamber groups and other musicians.

A sunset concert in the open air at Kirstenbosch is one of the highlights of summer in the Cape.
