Libertas Choir Rachmaninov - “All Night Vigil”
JOHAN DE VILLIERS, professor in mathematics at Stellenbosch University and founder of the Libertas Choir, has been the choir's conductor since 1989. His inspiring leadership, unique characteristics and exceptional competencies, acclaimed choral recitals and choral training, enjoy worldwide recognition and esteem. THE LIBERTAS CHOIR was founded in January 1989 to foster a spirit of trust and unity in a country torn apart by division. Now, almost 20 years later, Choir members from different cultural and ethnic groups are still bound together by their love of music and their gift of singing and entertaining. Through the shared experience of choral music the choir demonstrates reconciliation, solidarity, peace and freedom. The Choir’s extensive repertoire not only includes a wealth of great classical choral compositions, but also features a surprising variety of contemporary and fresh, original choral works. Engendering mutual understanding and respect across boundaries, the Choir actively explores and promotes its unique South African heritage of indigenous and traditional >music. By means of the Choir new talent is identified, cultivated, and given a platform – a process which enriches the greater cultural community, both locally and abroad. Annual concert trips to rural areas enable the Choir to take the music back to the people. Committed to the upliftment of historically disadvantaged communities, the Choir undertakes many projects to benefit the underprivileged. The choir is a non-profit organisation and donates some of the income generated by its concerts and performances to social projects.
