GARY HOFFMAN is one of the outstanding cellists of our time, combining instrumental mastery, great beauty of sound, and a poetic sensibility in his distinctive and memorable performances. Mr. Hoffman gained international renown with his victory as the first North American to win the Rostropovich International Competition in Paris in 1986. Mr. Hoffman collaborates regularly with such celebrated conductors as André Prévin, Charles Dutoit, Pinchas Zuckerman, Andrew Davis, Herbert Blomstedt, Kent Nagano, Jésus Lopez-Cobos and James Levine. Until 2001 ELNA VAN DER MERWE was the full-time accompanist at the Conservatoire of the University of Stellenbosch, where she previously received the degree BMus Hons cum laude. As a student she received various coveted prizes, including the Conservatoire Bursary (twice), and the FAK bursary. As a freelance pianist she performs all over the country as soloist as well as chamber musician. Elna is one of the most popular chamber musicians amongst professional instrumentalists in South Africa.
