Gustavo Romero: Beethoven Sonata Cycle: Recital 4

Gustavo Romero has a stellar reputation for both the technical brilliance and interpretive depth of his playing, and for his commitment to in-depth exploration of individual composers, as demonstrated by series focusing on the works of Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. The Washington Post acclaims him a pianist of genius. 

In addition to the Beethoven cycle, his engagements for the 2006-7 season include recitals and orchestral engagements in Bangkok, Taipei and Hong Kong, as well as as solist with the CPO (on 16 August) and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In July he will present 4 concerts in July in La Jolla, California and September at the University of North Texas devoted to the piano music and chamber music of Brahms, in commemoration of the 110th anniversary of the composer's death and in December he will present a series of recitals in Japan.

He has appeared at major festivals, including New York’s Mostly Mozart, Aspen Music, Eastern Music, and Montreux in Switzerland. In addition, Romero has appeared in over 20 countries, performing in Paris, Zurich, Milan, Berlin, Prague, and Johannesburg.  He has made many recordings, including the five Beethoven concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra. Other recordings include Albénizs Chantes dEspagne, Debussy’s Images I et II, and Scarlatti sonatas. Romero’s numerous prizes over the years include First Prize in the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in 1989 and the 1983 Avery Fisher Young Artist Career Grant.

After five years as assistant professor at the University of Illinois/Champaign, Romero is now associate professor of piano at the University of North Texas. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School, studying with Herbert Stessin. Gustavo Romero maintains residences in New York City and Dallas.
