Anniversary gala concert

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s (CPO)10th anniversary gala concert on 29 December 2010 at the Opera House at Artscape was a sell-out success and one of the most popular events in Cape Town during the end-of-year holiday season.

The sensational soprano Pretty Yende and tenor Given Nkosi, with the CPO conducted by Richard Cock, had members of the audience on their feet after their performances of opera arias and duets. At the end of the concert they were called back repeatedly for encores.

The CPO is today recognised as an important part of the city’s cultural life and the quality of its performances is acknowledged among others through invitations to perform overseas, including becoming the first symphony orchestra from the African continent to undertake a full concert tour of 18 cities in United States in February and March.

Some of these young musicians includes Dane Coetzee (cello), Charl van der Merwe (Bassoon) and Stephan Galvin (timpani & percussion) are founder members of the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestras (2004) while Ryan van der Rheede (trombone) joined the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) and Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble (CPYWE) in 2008.
